How I Turned a Bird Feeder into a Squirrel Feeder to Help Wildlife 🐿️❄️

I purchased a wooden bird feeder from Lowe’s (linked below), and with one simple adjustment, turned it into a squirrel feeder.

The original feeder includes clear plexiglass panels designed to keep bird seed contained. However, squirrels need easier access to larger food items like nuts.

✂️ The Simple Modification

To make this squirrel-friendly:

• I removed the plexiglass panels
• Left the feeder open so squirrels can reach inside
• Filled it with shelled hazelnuts and pecans

That’s it—no complicated tools or steps required!

🥜 What to Feed Squirrels

We used:
• Hazelnuts
• Pecans

You can also use:
• Unsalted peanuts
• Walnuts
• Corn (dried or on the cob)

Always avoid salted or flavored nuts.

💛 Why This Matters

After extreme winter weather, animals use a lot of energy just to survive. Providing a small food source can:

• Help restore energy
• Support local wildlife
• Encourage kids to connect with nature
